First of all when somebody hires me to handle their criminal case they’re not getting handed off to somebody who’s never practiced before. They’re talking to somebody who has handled hundreds, if not thousands of criminal defense cases over 27 years.
In addition to that, I really take an aggressive approach from the beginning of the case. In my experience, a lot of times attorneys get hired on a case and they think that their case starts at the first court appearance is. That’s not true at all in most cases.
Seriously if you’re waiting that long to get involved with law enforcement or the prosecution, you’re already behind the eight ball. The case has already been filed so many times. That experience of understanding the system, I’m able to actually intervene at the law enforcement level, get a hold of a detective or an investigating officer before the case has even been referred to a prosecutorial agency and share my client’s story.
What that sharing of that story does…is it shades the case. You’re now telling your client’s story to the detective or the investigating officer. I flood them with paperwork, all the good things about my client. So, I’m not necessarily battling the case and the facts of the case, because I don’t necessarily know them yet. I haven’t seen any police reports. I’m not entitled to see any until the case is filed. But I certainly want the investigating officer to know that I’m representing a human being and I’m not representing just anybody. I’m representing somebody who’s going to have counsel, and who’s going to be advocating for them all the way through the process. And I’ve found that sometimes you’ll get an investigating officer who will look at the case and sort of get a picture of who this person is. That’s what sets us apart.
